Thanksgiving 2012

Today is the day we, as a nation, have set aside to gather together and give thanks to the Lord for all that He has blessed us with.

Today, I would like to thank the Lord for all of my blessings, but specifically for the following ones from this past year-

10. Protection

This picture may not fit with 'protection' for you- but for me it does.
Here's why-
1. John 3:16- "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life."
I am protected from the schemes of the devil, because I have placed my heart, faith, and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. The ring is my 'promise ring', that my daddy gave me.
This ring represents that I have placed the responsibility of protecting my heart in the hands of my daddy and my Lord. Until the Lord brings the right man into my life, and even past that- until my wedding day, my heart will rest safely in their hands.  They will help me keep my feet on the ground, my head out of the clouds,
my eyes on the goal of serving the Lord,
and my heart focused on the Lord Himself.
What a blessing this truly is, and one that I have come to truly
appreciate the older I get!

There are many more things that I could list, but I will keep it at the top 10 today :).

As you spend time with your family today, take time to count your many blessings!

Lessons Learned from an Unwise King

I have been reading in 1 & 2 Kings the last couple of months.
It has been quite eye opening.
Earlier this year, I made a post about Building a Legacy and thinking generationally. I honestly don’t know if I truly knew how important that
was until I read 1 Kings 11.

Let’s look at the background story just a bit...
  • What did Solomon ask for?

1 Kings 3:7-13a (emphasis added to all scripture quotations is mine)
“And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant [Solomon] king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
“And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
“And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing.
“And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and…not asked for thyself long life; neither…riches for thyself, nor…the life of thine enemies; but…for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
“Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart…
“And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked…”

Jehovah was so pleased by what Solomon asked that He gave him not only the wisdom he asked for, but also riches and honor. The Lord only gave a small stipulation in verse 14-
“If thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.”

In chapters 4-10, Solomon builds the temple, prospers exceedingly, and is visited by many great leaders, including the Queen of Sheba. He truly was blessed by the Lord. His downfall sadly came in chapter 11.

1 Kings 11:1- “But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites.”

All of these tribes listed were tribes that the Lord had commanded the people of Israel to not marry, because they would draw their hearts away from the One True God, Jehovah.

  • What happened once Solomon let his guard down?

1 Kings 11:3-4- “And he (Solomon) had seven hundred wives,…and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.”

1 Kings 11:7 & 8 really shows how far Solomon had fallen from the presence of the LORD.
“Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.
“And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.”

1 Kings 11:9-10- “And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from the LORD God of Israel,…and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded.”

  • What did the Lord do as a result of Solomon’s turning away?

1 Kings 11:11-13—“The LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. In thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will rend it out of thy son. Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.”

Notice first of all what I have highlighted in bold- I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.”
The Lord’s punishment to Solomon was that He would take the kingdom from him- all of his riches, all of his land, all of his wives, EVERYTHING Solomon had- and give it to his servant (one of the other countries).

Now notice what I have highlighted in green- I will not do it for David thy father’s sake” and again for David my servant’s sake”.
This is where the generational thinking comes in. The Lord said He would take the kingdom away, but then He tells Solomon (in modern lingo)- “Because your dad served me faithfully, I won’t take the kingdom away from you, I’ll take it from your son. And furthermore- I won’t take the entire kingdom. I’ll leave your son a small portion, because your dad was a good man who served Me with all his heart.”

The Lord didn’t have to do that. He’s the God of the universe. He could have taken a deep breath and blew Israel off the map because of what Solomon had done. But He didn’t. Because of David being “a man after God’s own heart”, the Lord decided to spare them at least a small portion of what they had.

For every action, there is a reaction. We should be doing our best, with the Lord’s help, to leave a chain-reaction of blessings for future generations.
You've heard “look before you leap”? Well, how about “Think about the future before acting in the present”?

David’s humility is what spared the kingdom for Solomon.

  • What did the high places that Solomon built do?

Sadly, they brought destruction for the entire country of Israel. Read First and Second Kings. It’s one evil king after another. The few good kings are all praised for living a pure and upright life in every way, except for tearing down the high places. For each generation that came along with the high places still intact, the worse the sin of the country became.

Do your future generations a favor- search your heart and life now, and tear down the high places in your life. It will make things a little easier on your children and grandchildren when they come along.
If you already have children or grandchildren, then get rid of the high places in your life, and pray that the Lord will help your family to realize the need to tear down the high places in their lives.

Take back the ground from satan, it’s the only way you will ever get victory for yourself and for your family. Trust me, it’s easier to start with a clean slate, than to try and clean a dirty one.

May Jehovah bless each of you as you ‘think generationally’.

What Is Our Responsibility Now?

Yesterday was Election day.

Whether you are happy with the results or not, we as Christians have responsibilities no matter who is in office.

"What responsibilities?", you may ask.

"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
"For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
"For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;
"Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
"Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time."
-1 Timothy 2:1-6 (KJV)

To help understand things better, here are some definitions from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary-

Supplications- To make a humble entreaty; especially: to pray to God
Prayer- An address (as a petition) to God in word or thought
Intercession- Prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another
Thanksgiving (giving of thanks)- A prayer expressing Gratitude

So, here are some responsibilities that I see set before us in Scripture-

1. Make a supplication, or humble entreaty, to the Lord.
"O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed." "The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer."- (Psalm 6:1-2, 9)

2. Pray
Prayer can be explained in many ways. My favorite way to explain it, is the way my Daddy explains it- "Prayer is the way in which we are ushered into the Throne Room of Grace before a Holy and Righteous God."
If you are in love with someone, what do you usually do? You talk to that person. You tell them about your day.  You would be happy to just sit in their presence all day long.
Christ is our Bridegroom, we are His Bride. We should be longing to do the same with Him! We should gladly and urgently enter into our closet to pray, to talk to Him! He wants you to talk to Him, He wants to talk to you! And sometimes, we just need to sit in His presence. That is what prayer does. It is not always with words that we pray. Sometimes it's a point where you just kneel before Him and say- "Lord, I just want to bask in Your presence."
With all of the uncertainty before us, we should be seeking a closer relationship with the Father and His Son. Therefore, we should be spending more time in His presence!

3. Intercede for those in Authority
The verses above say that we are to pray, intercede, and give thanks for all men, but especially for our kings and those in authority.
But what is the reason we are to pray?
"Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth."- 1 Tim. 2:4
Christ is willing that all should repent and that none should perish! (2 Peter 3:9) We are to pray for those in authority, that they would be shown the truth, that they would believe the truth, and come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ!
That is the only way that things will ever change. Change comes from the heart. We must, as Christians, have a higher need than just what's happening to our pocket books. We must remember that we are fighting a spiritual battle that is raging for souls! We are soldiers in the army of the LORD, and it is our duty to FIGHT for those who we know are lost. Pray that someone would be sent to each person in authority, to show them the truth.

4. Give Thanks
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."- 1 Thess. 5:18

No matter who is in authority, no matter what your circumstances, tell the Lord your thankful for it. Don't think I don't know it's hard when things are going rough. It's very hard to thank the Lord when the powers out, when the kids are screaming, when the fridge is empty, or when you think the wrong man might have been put in authority (at work or otherwise). But remember-

"We know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

"For I know the thoughts I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."- Jeremiah 29:11

We must trust that the Lord has a perfect plan and that everything is bringing us closer to that plan.

So, that is my thoughts on the recent happening in America.

You have a responsibility Christian, are you going to take up the Cross and Cause of Christ?
